The target audience for our thriller is males and females under the age of 25. This is because a younger audience are more likely to be excited by films of the thriller genre and more readily experience and enjoy the common themes of tension, suspense and violence. Additionally, older males and females are expected to prefer less violent movies, instead favoring action, comedy and romantic comedy.


Examples of thrillers:

The Purge attracts a young audience under the age of 25. This suggests that the majority of people, or the average demographic, that watch thrillers are under 25 as the Purge is a thriller. It also shows how females should still be targeted as they can contribute to a larger audience for thriller films such as The Purge even though it could be argued that thrillers are stereotypically for males.

There are also other thriller films that show the genre is not only popular in males under 25. An example of this is Secret Window, which is shown by YouGov to have a demographic of females aged 18 to 24. Therefore, it is clear that thrillers do not attract only males, although this may vary depending on the type of thriller and the plot.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is an example of a thriller film. YouGov shows this film to have an average demographic that enjoys this film to be males of 18-24 years old. This shows how males under 25 can be an appropriate target audience for thriller films and how The Hunger Games: Catching Fire shares a similar target audience to our thriller film.

An example of another thriller movie that appeals to males under 25, is Jurassic World. Stated by YouGov, the average demographic that enjoys the film is males aged between 18 and 24. This therefore contributes evidence that the key demographic to target for films of the thriller genre is under 25's, and as this example is shown as being male and the other films listed have shown females, it also depicts how both males and females can be targeted for a film of the thriller genre.

Social Groups:

Another key aspect of demographics that is important to consider in the thriller genre is the different social groups which exists, especially within the younger audience as our thriller is aimed at under 25s. For thriller movies, the typical cliques generally interested in the genre are groups which normally fall into the alternative category. Alternative groups are driven by the need set themselves apart from the mainstream. From candy-hued hair to sleeve tattoos and multiple piercings, they’re determined to be different – but do it together. The group who ‘want out’ of the mainstream – an experimental group trying anything and everything alternative from grunge to hardcore. Young alternatives are a long standing youth group – the entry level alternatives that simply want to set themselves apart from the mainstream by looking alternative, listening to alternative music and having alternative views. We will therefore ensure that our opening sequence aims towards these social groups, and also draws attention from cliques similar to the young alternatives.
